School has been in session here in Indiana for 12 days now, and one problem that my kids have begun to have is, “What do I do with my mask when I’m not wearing it for things like lunch or recess?” We decided that laying it down on their desk was just gross, and their teachers didn’t have anywhere to put it in the classroom. Since I had to make trip into town this weekend for some groceries, we decided to solve the “Where do I put my mask problem?'” In just 30 minutes, you can solve that problem as well.

What You Need

How to Make the Lanyard

Step 1: Slide a charm hook through the cord color of your choice. This package also had red and blue at the top of it. But the little boys got excited and took it off before I could remember to get a picture. Haha!

Step 2: Double knot the cord around the hook.

Step 3: Attach the hook to one side of your mask. Then put your mask on. Decide how far down you want the mask to hang on your body when you take it off. Then cut the cord to the desired length.

Step 4: Quickly burn the end of the cord that you just cut. This will make the beads slide over it easier.

Step 5: Decorate your cord with your chosen beads. I put Mrs. G on mine since I’m a teacher and will wear it at school. My oldest son picked out football beads and did his initials. My youngest son just spelled out his name on his. You can be as creative as you want. This is the FUN part!

Step 6: Tie a knot at the end of your beaded design so it doesn’t slide all over your lanyard.

Step 7: Slide the other hook onto the end of your cord. Double knot it.

Step 8: Attach the clip to the other side of your mask. You’re all done and have a safe place to keep your mask!

The Finished Look

Here is how my 6th grader’s turned out. We made his, mine, and my 2nd grader’s all in 30 minutes!

He LOVES football, so he put football beads on both sides of his lanyard. You can see where it hangs on his body when he’s not wearing it.
He even centered his initials so when he was wearing his mask that they hang down the center of his back. So cool!
This is what it looks like when he’s wearing it. The excess cord hangs behind him so it’s not in the way.

So there you have it! No more worries for this Mama about the kids putting their masks down in something nasty during the school day. The boys had fun picking out the beads to decorate their lanyards with, and since they had a say in designing them, I know they will wear them.

If you give this a try, I’d love to see a picture of your designs in the comments. Happy decorating!
