How to Plan a Vacation

How to Plan a Vacation

It’s getting to be the time of year where the boys start asking, “What are we going to do this summer?” Ever since we took our Disney trip, they have come to look forward to a summer family trip. Our trip last summer got canceled

Cold Italian Baked Potato Salad

Cold Italian Baked Potato Salad

Today’s recipe is a variation of one of my favorite salads in the entire world. Potato salad! (I mean it has the word salad in its name, so I can count it as somewhat of a health food, right? I know…I know, but I had

A Trip Down Memory Lane with Dime Store Candy

A Trip Down Memory Lane with Dime Store Candy

There is a little antique store in a neighboring town that sells tons of old dime store candy. I love to take a stroll down memory lane every time I enter this store.

As a kid, my sister and I used to do odd jobs around my aunt’s house for any spare change she would give us. Heck, we’d even clean her toilet for a quarter just so we could get her coveted change.

What did we do with that change you might ask? Well, we took it to a little dime store in town and went CRAZY buying candy! I was so smitten that I could buy individual pieces of any kind of candy imaginable for just a penny.

My sister and I would come out of that dime store with a brown paper sack FULL of candy. Then we’d take it home and divide out what was ours. I’d always hide my bag of candy under my bed so my little brother wouldn’t find it and eat all of my hard work. Hey! I cleaned toilets for that candy! It was all MINE!

Old Time Candy

If you were ever a small child (that’s everyone!), then you know exactly what I’m talking about. So you can imagine my excitement when I discovered that I can still buy the candy of my dreams online at OldTimeCandy! (Click on my links to get 10% off your order!)

From Astro Pops, Big Red Gum, Runts, Strawberry Bon Bons, and Clark Bars, you can find it all!

There are many ways that you can navigate their website. You can walk the candy aisle, shop for candy by the decade (my personal favorite way to shop), shop for candy by flavor and type, or shop for candy by occasion, gift, or assortments. You can even buy it in bulk or pack a bag of your own creation. (I think I’m going to pack a bag of my own creation for Valentine’s Day gifts this year. If you need other Valentine’s Day gift ideas to add to candy, check out my other post here.)

Pre 1920s Candy

Candy in the pre 1920s focused on a time period that was concerned with vintage movies, fashion, and art. Check out just a few of the popular candies from that time period below. (I also suggest you go to the website. They have a ton more options there.)

The website has a wide variety of candy drop flavors.

1920s Candy

The Roarin’ 20s were in full swing. World War I was over, families were reunited, and Wall Street was set to boom. Take a look at some of the popular candies from this time period.

1930s Candy

Although times were tough, people still found ways to enjoy the little things. Take a look at just a few of the things they enjoyed.

1940s Candy

Times were tough! Americans were in the midst of a second World War, candy was an extra special treat, and food was rationed. Here’s some of the popular candies back then.

It’s a licorice pipe!

1950s Candy

The second World War was over, families were reunited, and TV, space, and rock and roll became the focus. Both of my parents were born in the 1950s. Here’s what caught their interests back then.

cherry slices
Candy cigarette anyone?
atomic fireballs

1960s Candy

The 1960s were a decade to remember. The United States landed on the moon and history was made. Here a few things that were popular back then.

1970s Candy

With the advancement of technology, we saw lots of great things come out of the 1970s. The very first Star Wars movies premiered along with the Atari 400 (Anyone remember Space Invaders?).

1980s Candy

The 1980s…this was the decade I was born! MTV, the first cell phone, and Michael Jackson were popular along with some of these favorite candies.

I begged for this stuff every time we went to the store.

1990s Candy

The 90s were the time period I was cleaning toilets and doing chores for meager change for candy, candy, candy. We enjoyed our dial up internet, chat rooms, Beanie Babies, and laying out in the sun with our boom boxes. Here is some of that candy we enjoyed.

My friends and I may or may not have dared one another to see how many of these we could cram into our mouths in junior high study hall. In our defense, our brains weren’t fully developed yet. So yes, I know, it wasn’t very smart.
I remember my mom thinking this was the stupidest candy ever. I think she just hated the mess it made and the crying baby sounds we’d make while eating it.
This was THE candy to buy when I was in high school. I’d buy one of these out of the candy machine and eat it for lunch. Total dork, I know!
We thought it was so cool that they redid this candy.

Other Fun Finds

There are so many other fun finds besides candy on this website that take you back to your childhood. The Retro Toy section could keep me (or an excited husband that you’ve shared this site with) busy for HOURS! From Krazy Straws, Chinese finger traps, mood rings, rubber band guns, and pick up sticks, there is something for everyone.

But don’t just take my word for it. Head on over there and see what fun you can create yourself. With a look around, you can create the perfect Easter, birthday, Mother’s Day, or just because gift. I can’t wait to hear about what all you order!

Disney World: Exploring Magic Kingdom-Day 2

We were up just as early the second day to being exploring the other half of Magic Kingdom. Although you can’t really tell how excited the boys were in this picture. Haha!
