Do you or your kids struggle with repeating the same outfits week after week? I swear my boys would just grab from the clean laundry baskets every week and wear exactly what they wore the week before if I’d let them. Thankfully, I figured out a fairly quick, easy solution to solve this problem.

Sorting ALL THAT LAUNDRY!

At our house, it feels like the laundry is never ending. I try to do a load in the morning before I head off to school. Then I try to do another load when I get home. My goal is to have it all caught up by Sunday afternoon/evening.

As it comes out of the dryer, each person has a designated clothes basket that their clean clothes go into. Once the laundry is done on Sundays, the boys carry their clothes baskets upstairs. Then they begin the process of putting it all away.

Clothes baskets in the laundry room. They used to be labeled, but those fell off. Now I know whose is whose.

So How Do They Put Away Their Clean Clothes?

I’ve had the boys hanging up their clothes and putting them in their closets since they were little. You know, back in the days when they actually WANTED to help with chores. So now they have no excuse not to do it.

Their shirts hang on hangers in their closets. They either fold their pants and put them in the dresser or on a shelf in their closet. I taught them that as shirts come out of their clean clothes basket and go on the hanger to hang them at the very end of their closet. So my boys always hang their clean shirts on the right side of their closets. This causes them to see the shirts they haven’t worn that are hanging in front of all the clean ones they just put away.

Picking Out Clothes for the Next School Week

My kids know that when they pick out clothes for the next week that the need to pick from the front of their closet. They can’t go to the back and grab the stuff they just wore the week before.

As a working mom, it makes my life easier if my kids lay out their clothes for the upcoming week on Sunday afternoon. We check the weather and look for school notes about dress up days as they pick out their new outfits for the upcoming week. They toss new outfits into their clothes basket and bring them downstairs for me to hang up in the laundry room.

From there, we follow the process in this blog post called “Planning a Week’s Worth of School Clothes“.

What If My Kids Don’t Have Enough Clothes To Do This?

I try to make sure that my kids have enough shirts for 2 weeks worth of outfits. They may not have that many pairs of pants or shorts, but that’s okay. Pants and shorts don’t seem to be quite as noticeable when repeated in outfits.

If your child is in need of some new shirts, you can always check out discount stores, places like Goodwill, or buy them online for a good price at Temu. I totally understand not wanting to spend a ton of money on clothes since kids grow so stinking FAST!

Is This How You Put Your Clothes Away Too?

You bet! It makes my life so much easier to follow this exact same process for my clothes too. It also helps make my mornings less stressful as I’m not rushing around trying to figure out what to wear each day.

If you try my process out, give it a go for about a month. Research says it takes 21 days to train your brain to do new things. It will let you truly start to get into the routine. Then I’d love for you to come back here and let me know how it went.
