My kids would seriously eat pizza for just about every meal if I’d let them. And while I do love a good slice of pizza myself, there are only so many times I can eat it. That’s how this super quick and easy Hawaiian pizza sub came to be.

An Inspiration

It was just another Saturday night, and I was at a loss for what to make for dinner. Absolutely NOTHING sounded good. You know what I’m talking about right? It was one of those nights where I couldn’t think of a single thing to make. So I did what I seldom ever do, I asked the kids what they wanted for dinner. Stupid me. I should have known what their answer would be, but apparently I just couldn’t help myself nor should I have been shocked when they said they wanted pizza. Great. Pizza. AGAIN!

I was not about to order pizza. I had just been to the grocery store, and there were tons of things sitting around my kitchen. Which of course makes it even more ironic that nothing sounded good. I mean, I plan a whole month’s menu worth of meals so that all we have to do is look at it, decide what dinner off of it sounds good, and make it. As my 8 year old says, easy peasy lemon squeezy. Nope…not on this night.

Since the kids wanted pizza, I looked at the menu and thought about what dinners I had on it. My mom’s state fair subs were one of the choices. Surely there was a way I could give the kids pizza or some form of it with those state fair subs. Because let’s face it, sausage is my least favorite food in the world (although my husband and kids adore it), and I just threw those subs on the menu to finish it and get my grocery list made.

From State Fair Subs to Pizza Subs

As I began to look around the kitchen, I realized that I could quite possibly pull off the kid’s pizza request. I could use the loaf of French bread that the state fair subs recipe calls for and use it like a pizza crust. Instead of sausage, I could use the deli ham I had bought for lunches that week, and I already had the mozzarella cheese since I’d planned on making the state fair subs anyway.

But how to make something other than regular old pizza? Then it hit me! My family sometimes ordered Hawaiian pizza from the local pizza place in town. And I knew that I had just seen a spare bottle of BBQ sauce in the pantry that I had bought for who knows what and then forgotten about. I’d also seen a can of crushed pineapple in the pantry that the boys had wanted but never ate, so that meant it was fair game. How about a BBQ ham Hawaiian pizza sub? Yes! That would have to work!

How to Make Hawaiian Pizza Subs

I used what I knew about my mom’s state fair sub recipe and just changed the ingredients to make my new recipe. First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Next, I took the French bread and sliced it in half. Then I placed it on an ungreased cookie sheet.

In case you have no idea what a loaf of French bread looks like.
All cut in half. There’s no need to grease the cookie sheet. It doesn’t stick.

Then I found my BBQ sauce.

See? It never got used because it was just waiting to be the star of this recipe someday.

Then I squirted the BBQ sauce all over the French bread.

Next, I used a butter knife to spread all of that sweet yumminess all over the bread.

Maybe I won’t use quite so much next time. This was really messy, but so good!

Then I put a layer of deli ham down.

This is what I had on hand, but you could use any ham you have.
Next time I might try chopping up the ham. The toppings wanted to slide off as we ate. My kids wanted pizza, so they kind of got that pizza experience with this. Haha!

Then I drained my can of crushed pineapple and used a spoon to put it on top of the ham.

Make sure you drain your pineapple really well. You can see that if you don’t, the juice might run off the sides of your sandwich making it messy.

Top with additional ham slices.

I think next time I’d also cut this ham up so my toppings don’t slide.

Top with your mozzarella cheese.

You can add as little or as much cheese as you like. I prefer to use the entire bag.

Bake it at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes, or until the cheese is all melted and gooey.

Hot out of the oven. See what I mean when I said I added too much BBQ sauce? It made a mess on the pan, but it was sooooo GOOD!

Enjoy! I had a bag of coleslaw lying around, so I made a tropical coleslaw to go along with this.

My kids ended up LOVING this dish! We also got to thinking about all of the different possibilities for how we could change it up. I’m thinking a fun family cooking night where everyone gets to make their own pizza subs using this method is in order. What do you think? How might you change this up to match your families preferences?

If you don’t want such a sweet BBQ sauce, you can change the sauce type you use. You might also consider cutting the ham up into slices before putting it onto your French bread so that the toppings don’t slide off your pizza as easily.
