Are you looking for a way to keep your kids entertained but yet still doing something productive? Are you tired of them wanting to do nothing but play online games? Do you want to help instill the love of reading in your kids? Or maybe your child needs some more help with reading? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then read on to discover the magic of Vooks.

Let me start by saying that I PROMISE I would never promote something I haven’t used myself. So you can rest assured that I know what I’m talking about when it comes to Vooks.

I started using Vooks in my classroom almost two years ago. I was looking for another way to help keep my struggling readers engaged while still working on important reading skills in a fun way. Let me say that Vooks did not disappoint. I saw my struggling reader’s confidence grow, reading levels go up, and instead of grumbling about reading, they began to pick up books on their own. They finally figured out what interested them. And for some kids, that’s all it takes to get them reading. I mean, who seriously wouldn’t love to listen to a silly story about a farting unicorn that learns an important life lesson? It’s real, and it’s there. And kids LOVE it!

What Is Vooks?

So by now you’re probably wondering what exactly Vooks is. Let me explain. Vooks in an online library that is full of animated children’s books that are read aloud. (And let’s face it, whether we like it or not, in this world of technology where kids are constantly stimulated, the animated part of these books is quite appealing to kids. Not that kids should never touch a paper book because I do believe there is immense value to that. But if your child is needing an extra push in reading, this may just be the thing you need to make that happen.) There are zero ads on this site (amazing, right?), so you don’t have to worry about your kiddos seeing something inappropriate. And since there are so MANY children’s books on this site, your child is free to explore a wide variety of books that match his or her interests and surely fall in love with reading. Woo-hoo!

How It Works

The teacher in me absolutely adores Vooks! The books are read aloud with each word being read aloud highlighted as kids listen. Since kids are listening, fluent reading is being modeled, they’re witnessing a visual connection between words and text, and they’re working on decoding, comprehension, language, and vocabulary skills as well.

The Reading Research

And research shows that just 20 minutes of reading a day is all it takes to strengthen children’s reading skills. According to Learning Links, kids who read for 20 minutes each day see 1.8 MILLION words each year and have scores in the 90th percentile on standardized tests because they have seen so many words! If you compare that to kids who read for just 1 minute each day, they only see 8,000 words each year and have scores in the 10th percentile on standardized tests. Woah! Big difference there!

Try It For Yourself

But don’t just take my word for it. Head on over to Vooks (go there NOW if you haven’t yet) and check it out for yourself. For just the price of one fancy coffee drink a month, you can help instill the love of reading for any child in your life. A Vooks subscription would also make a great gift! Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, and then soon after that is Easter. Or you could make it a birthday gift if you wanted. Or perhaps my favorite gift of all-a just because 2020 sucked gift. There’s a 30 day free trial just in case you’re not sure. What are you waiting for? Head on over and check it out! You’ve got nothing to lose. And if you have any questions about ways to help your struggling reader, let me know in the comments. I’m happy to help.
