These tasty little sliders have been a breakfast staple around our house on Sunday mornings for a long time. They come together rather quickly, and if you double the recipe, there are enough leftovers for another breakfast during the week. They’re packed with protein and quite filling! I mean these things got me through LABOR with my first born. LABOR! 19 hours and 45 minutes of LABOR! Read on to find out how to make this hearty breakfast sandwich.

The Story Behind These

I originally fell in love with these sliders on a Friday morning at a school breakfast carry in 15 years ago. The teacher down the hall from me was known for her awesome baking and cooking skills. I’m not one to care for breakfast carry ins because they usually consist of lots of things made from eggs, and since I’ve had my youngest, eggs give me terrible stomach aches (I’m talking lying on the couch for days in pain stomach aches) if I eat them by themselves. So I was super excited to see these glorious little breakfast sandwiches in the teacher’s lounge that morning. After one bite, I knew I was in love, and I HAD to get the recipe. When I asked my friend for her recipe, she said that she didn’t really have one, but she could try to write out for me what she did. That was good enough, and after school that day, I stopped by Wal-Mart to get my needed ingredients. I was making these for breakfast the following Sunday morning!

What You Need

  1. Salted Stick Butter
  2. Yellow Mustard
  3. Minced Onion
  4. Kings Hawaiin Sweet Rolls (I buy 2 packaged so there are leftovers.)
  5. Worcestershire Sauce
  6. Sliced Ham
  7. Provolone, Cheddar, or your favorite type of cheese slices

How to Make

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Then melt 1 stick of salted butter.

Whisk the following ingredients into your melted butter:

2 teaspoons of yellow mustard

1 1/2-2 teaspoons minced onion

1 1/2-2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

Whisking together.

Line a sheet pan with aluminum foil. This makes clean up go so much faster!

Slice the rolls in half horizontally. Arrange on your foil lined sheet. Set your tops aside.

Arrange the ham on your bun. I LOVE to get thick sliced honey maple ham from the deli, but you can also use lunchmeat.

Arrange your cheese on top of the ham. We like these with provolone cheese and cheddar cheese, but I bet they’d be good with other kinds of cheese.

Replace tops.

Brush with the butter mixture. Okay, drench with the butter mixture because this mixture is so so good!

Bake at 350 degrees for about 10-12 minutes, or until your cheese is all ooey-gooey and melted! I mean, just look at this!

Just two of these things got me through 19 hours and 45 minutes of labor with my oldest! He came 2 weeks early, and since he was my first baby, I wasn’t expecting him yet. I naively believed he would probably come late since he was my first. Of course I was wrong! I woke up starving that Sunday morning in 2009, so we ate breakfast around 8:00 a.m. At 1:00 p.m., we decided to go into town, but my water broke, and our plans changed. Off to the hospital we went, and baby Tristin was born 19 hours and 45 minutes later. Since they won’t let you eat anything solid in the hospital once you’re in labor, this was the last meal I’d had before going to the hospital. I’m so thankful that these stuck with me for several hours. I can’t imagine how famished I’d have been if I’d have eaten toast for breakfast instead! (Thank goodness for my teacher friend who brought these to that school carry in years before!)

Over the years, we’ve discovered that the leftovers keep the kids full until lunch on a school day. They even make a great grab and go lunch to quickly reheat in the microwave.

If you make them, let me know in the comments how they turned out. Also let me know if you made any variations to the recipe. I’d love to hear so I have another excuse to make them yet again. Haha!
