There is absolutely no question that the two things my children would eat every. single. day. if they were allowed would be pizza and hamburgers. I should even throw my husband into that category because he loves these two things just as much, if not more, than the kids.

My love for pizza burgers comes from elementary school. I remember the lunch ladies serving these once a month (usually a Friday) with french fries, applesauce, and a brownie. Oh how I secretly wanted to be a school lunch lady when I grew up so that I could make this yummy food. I think by now you’ve figured out, it was one of my FAVORITE school lunches! I remember begging my mom to make these at home, but she had no idea what I was talking about. And even though I’m an adult, my love for these things hasn’t gone away. So I set out to recreate them at home. They are a quick weeknight meal that comes together pretty easily. You can even get the whole family involved to help it go faster. And unlike the lunch ladies, I usually serve ours with some sort of vegetable, but I know 100% that the kids would love it if I served ours with french fries, applesauce, and a brownie.

Step 1

This recipe comes together pretty quickly. It’s great for those super busy weeknights. I always recruit the kids or husband to make it go faster. They can do most of the prep work (steps 2 & 3) while you’re frying the hamburger.

Begin by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Then the next thing you’ll want to do is cook a pound of hamburger on the stove until it’s done. Sometimes I add Italian seasoning to the hamburger as I’m cooking it. It all depends on if I have it on hand or not. When the hamburger is done, go ahead and drain it.

We have seriously had these pots and pans since we got married! I remember thinking they were so expensive when we bought them, but my husband assured me they would be worth it. Turns out he was right. Thanks, honey!

Step 2

Separate the top hamburger bun from the bottom hamburger bun and place them onto a large cookie sheet. There isn’t any need to spray the cookie sheet. I’ve never had a problem with these sticking.

Step 3

I use a large spoon to add 2 tablespoons of pizza sauce to the top of each hamburger bun. You can really add as much sauce as you like. I usually make a couple of extra saucy ones for my husband who truly believes there’s no such thing as too much pizza sauce.

Step 4

Once the hamburger is cooked and drained, add about 2 tablespoons of hamburger to the top of each pizza sauced bun. If you have a bunch of meat lovers, you can always add more meat. Likewise, if you’re like me and don’t particularly care for much meat, you can always add less meat or none at all.

Step 5

Top each hamburger bun with 5 slices of pepperoni. Again, you can always use more or less depending on your tastes.

Step 6

Top each hamburger bun with mozzarella cheese. Or you can use whatever kind of cheese is your favorite to top pizza with.

As you can tell, I generously topped each of these. I’m totally okay with toppings being all over the bottom of the pan. I mean, it will wash off. And these just aren’t the same if you skimp on toppings.

Step 7

Bake these babies in a 350 degree oven for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese melts. Try to resist opening the oven to take peeks at them. They will smell delightful, and I know it will be hard to resist. But it’s worth the wait. Trust me. Besides, this gives you time to make a vegetable to go along with it (or cook some french fries, dig through your refrigerator to find the applesauce, or maybe even whip up a batch of brownies).

Just look at all that melted ooey-gooey delightfulness!

Step 8

My favorite step: EAT them!!!!!

Hopefully you’ve figured out this recipe is super flexible. If you don’t like hamburger, you can always use sausage or ground turkey. You could even make it meat free and add veggies only. Feel free to play around with the types of cheese you use to make it extra tasty. You can tell I’ve thought about other ways to enjoy these, can’t you? Maybe you’ve even come up something I haven’t thought of. If you have, get cooking and share it with me in the comments below. I can’t wait to hear how these turned out for you. Happy eating!
