Don’t I look like I was quite the spunky little thing once upon a time ago? I had to have been 7 or 8 in this picture, and that outfit was my absolute FAVORITE in the whole entire world. One thing that I LOVED doing even way back then was cooking and baking. And thankfully my mom fed into my love for it even when my brother, sister, and I woke her up at 6:00 on a Saturday morning. One of my fondest memories of those early Saturday mornings, was when my mom would make doughnuts with us. The little doughnut shop in our town was rather expensive for our family, so my mom found a way to still let us indulge in our love for donuts and spend some quality time with us. While these donuts aren’t quite the same as what you’d find at the doughnut shop, I still have fond memories of them, and I enjoy carrying on the tradition and making them with my own kids on lazy Saturday mornings.
This simple doughnut is what I would wake my mom up to make on a Saturday morning. And when I say simple, it really is. Fried canned biscuit dough rolled in powdered sugar. So simple, and so tasty. My brother liked his rolled in cinnamon and sugar. And my sister liked to make different icing glazes to go over hers. No matter what you cover them with, they are delicious. Read on for how to make them.
Step 1
Find a deep pan.
Step 2
Pour oil into your pan. I poured about 3-4 inches of canola oil into my pan. Typically I buy the canola oil in the link, but my husband went to the store and picked this up in the picture. It worked fine too.
Step 3
Begin to heat your oil over medium heat until it is hot. I start prepping my doughnuts while the oil slowly heats. You’ll know it’s hot when it starts to bubble and a small amount of dough dropped into it floats back to the top and begins to brown. Don’t let your oil get too hot, or it will burn your doughnuts and the insides won’t get done. Also this is HOT, so keep your kids away from the hot oil.
Step 4
Find a can of biscuit dough. You can use whatever kind is your favorite or whatever you have on hand. I’m not picky about my biscuit dough for these, but you might be, so feel free to try different types. Let me know if you find a type you absolutely love.
Step 5
Okay, so the elementary teacher is coming out in me here. But you need to OPEN the biscuit dough. If you’re really brave, you can let one of your kids do this. They love how it explodes open. We call these exploding biscuits in my house.
Step 6
Find your doughnut cutter if you have one. If not, you can just roll your biscuit dough into balls. This will create doughnut holes. My mom didn’t own a biscuit cutter, so we made doughnut holes 99.9% of the time because it took forever to cut circles out of the middle of the biscuits.
Step 7-skip if you don’t have a doughnut cutter
If you have a doughnut cutter, take each biscuit out of the container and flatten it with the palm of your hand. If you want bigger doughnuts than what I made, combine 2 biscuits and then flatten them.
Step 8-skip if you don’t have a doughnut cutter
Use the doughnut cutter to cut your doughnuts out. Save the excess dough on the sides to roll together for more doughnut holes.
Step 9
Line a plate with paper towels so your doughnuts and doughnut holes have something to drain on.
Step 10
When your oil is hot, start dropping doughnuts in to cook. I usually cook no more than 3 doughnuts at a time. Let them sit in the oil until they are a golden color, then flip over using a spatula or tongs, and let them cook until they’re light golden again.
*Do NOT let your kids drop the doughnuts into the hot oil. I burnt the entire side of my right hand from my little finger down when I was doing this as a kid. I had blisters for weeks and still remember it like it was yesterday.
Step 11
While your doughnuts are cooling slightly, pour some powdered sugar on a plate.
Step 12
Once your doughnuts have cooled slightly, roll them TWICE in the powdered sugary goodness.
Step 13
Eat! Enjoy all that delicious powdery sugar goodness!
Easy Homemade Doughnuts
Ingredients
- 1 tube canned biscuit dough
- 3 cups canola oil
- 2 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Pour about 3 cups of canola oil into a deep pan. Heat it over medium heat.
- Line a plate with paper towels.
- Open one tube of canned biscuits.
- Follow this step if you have a doughnut cutter. If not, skip this step and move on to the next step. Decide how big you want your doughnuts. If you want them bigger than the ones pictured, take two biscuits out of the canned biscuit container and roll them together into the shape of a ball. If you want doughnuts small like mine, then use one biscuit. Take your ball of dough, and use your hand to press it flat on the counter. Then use your doughnut cutter to cut out your doughnut. Save the left over dough for the next step.
- If you did not have a doughnut cutter, take one (for a small doughnut hole) or two biscuits (for a larger doughnut hole) out of the container and roll them together into the shape of a ball. If you used a doughnut cutter, then use your left over dough to roll into the shape of a ball in the size you desire.
- Continue until all biscuits have been used.
- Once your oil is hot, carefully drop no more than 3 doughnuts or doughnut holes into the oil at a time.
- Using tongs, turn the donuts over in the oil once they reach a light golden brown color.
- Once both sides are a light golden brown, remove the doughnut from the oil onto the paper towel lined plate to cool slightly.
- Repeat the process until all doughnuts are fried.
- Roll the slightly cooled doughnut in powdered sugar. Then roll it in powdered sugar again.
- Turn your oil off when done and remove it from the heat.
- Enjoy your yummy doughnuts!
My kids love doughnuts. This recipe looks much easier to make than regular recipes.
They are super easy! They come together pretty fast, which is so nice, especially when your kids think they’re going to starve to death before breakfast. LOL Or maybe it’s just my kids that believe that.
Love the idea of being able to create such quick donuts at home! Very creative!
Thanks, Abigail! I hope you enjoy them.
